About Dr. Brown

Dr. Jeremiah Brown, Jr. is a board-certified ophthalmologist with more than 10 years of practice experience as a Vitreoretinal Surgeon. He founded the Brown Retina Institute in 2010 to establish a medical practice devoted to diagnosing, treating and researching diseases of the retina and vitreous as well as uveitis. Dr. Brown also holds an academic appointment as Clinical Associate Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio. Dr. Brown is President of the San Antonio Society of Ophthalmology. He also serves as a voting member on the FDA Ophthalmic Devices Advisory Board.



Earlier in his career, Dr. Brown served with distinction as a Vitreoretinal Surgeon and adjunct Assistant Professor at Brooke Army Medical Center in Houston. He was awarded the Army Meritorious Service Medal in 2002.

As a respected surgeon in the field of ophthalmology, Dr. Brown currently serves as a voting member on the Food and Drug Administration’s Advisory Panel on Ophthalmic Devices. He is also an ophthalmology consultant to the U.S. Army Medical Materiel Development Agency. Additionally, he had served as Director of Ophthalmology Research at the Army’s Laser Research Laboratory, where he continues to fulfill consultant duties.

Dr. Brown graduated cum laude from Harvard University with a degree in biology. He went on to complete his medical degree and Master of Science degree in a dual five-year program at the University of California at San Francisco and Berkeley. Dr. Brown was selected to be a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha honorary medical society. Upon graduation, Dr. Brown completed his residency training in Ophthalmology, as well as a two-year fellowship in Vitreoretinal Surgery, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.

Dr. Brown’s dedication to his medical profession is evident through his frequent publication in scientific papers, abstracts and book chapters. He has taught several instructional courses and given relevant presentations throughout his practice history. Dr. Brown is an active member of several professional organizations, including the American Society of Retinal Specialists, American Academy of Ophthalmology and American Medical Association. He is also the former Treasurer and Educational Program Director of the San Antonio Society of Ophthalmology.

Dr. Brown is motivated by the satisfaction and rewarding sense of accomplishment from preserving vision in his patients. It is this feeling that drives his clinical practice and his desire to research and develop new treatments for his retina patients. Fluent in Spanish, Dr. Brown enjoys serving the diverse San Antonio population.

This includes comprehensive knowledge of laser procedures and other forms of retinal surgery.
